Syed Kazmi

I spent 16 months at Environment and Climate Change Canada building the public search for the CEPA Environmental Registry: more than 100,000 regulatory records, bilingual, on Vue 3 and .NET 8. I am looking for a new grad software engineering role in Toronto, starting spring 2027.

    Environment and Climate Change Canada

May 2025 to August 2026 · Toronto, ON

Sixteen month co-op on the Registry and Search team, inside the Regulatory Services Platform initiative. I worked across the full CEPA Environmental Registry stack: a Vue 3 single page app, a Drupal 10 authoring site, a .NET 8 Azure Functions API, and SQL Server behind an Azure AI Search index.

    What shipped

    • Five public search pages (substances, instruments, documents, regulations, public consultations) over a corpus of more than 100,000 records, each bilingual and each built on a shared search template.
    • Reusable search primitives the five pages share: result cards, filter panels, pagination, autocomplete, and bilingual routing.
    • .NET 8 Azure Function endpoints in C# for item retrieval, publishing workflows, relationship expansion, and Azure AI Search indexing, documented with OpenAPI and run locally in Docker.
    • Migration and publishing work across SQL Server schemas, stored procedures, and item, revision, and publish-event tables feeding the search index.
    • xUnit integration tests and SonarQube analysis wired into the Azure DevOps pipeline.

    N-CART Robots

September 2024 to May 2025 · Toronto, ON

Volunteer research with fourth year Computer Science and Engineering students across four robotics platforms: Vanguard MK2, Matilda, Nepwak, and Pedsco. Hardware integration, control software, and systems testing under faculty supervision.

    What shipped

    • Designed, tested, and debugged sensor guided navigation routines and real time motor control loops across the four platforms.
    • Embedded systems
    • Control theory
    • Sensor integration
  • Customer Experience Consultant and Project Lead

    Moms Against Racism Canada

June 2026 · Remote, via Riipen Labs

A three week consulting engagement for a federally registered nonprofit. I led the team, ran the research, and owned the final recommendation.

    What shipped

    • Traced a member engagement collapse through signup, social, and Q and A data: 144 signups fell to single digit activity within two months, and the break was in post approval onboarding rather than in acquisition.
    • Recommended a BuddyBoss onboarding redesign (automated subgroup routing, a three email welcome sequence, one clear starting point for new members) and presented it to the founder.

05 / About

About

I am in my fifth year of Computer Engineering at Toronto Metropolitan University, on the Software Engineering option, graduating in April 2027. Most of what I know about building software I learned on systems that other people depend on rather than in a lecture hall: a federal registry that has to be right in two languages, a maze robot with no operating system underneath it, a database that has to refuse a duplicate registration even when the application forgets to.

Outside of that I lift, play basketball and volleyball, and do freelance graphic and logo design. The design work is why I care about the details on this page.
